I cannot spare any of my people. They are scholars, arcanists, minds trained for study, not slaughter. I need them lucid, focused, working. If I send them into that den, I lose more than soldiers. I lose what little progress we have left. You are different. You carry no obligation to my house, no oath to my cousin’s ambition. And you handle yourself like one who has seen real battle. That is what I require. Listen carefully. I need your help, and I will see you rewarded in a manner worthy of the risk. Go to the den. Find what they uncovered. Find what drained them so completely, so quickly. It must still be there. An artifact. A stone. Whatever it is, it is the source. Bring me proof. Bring me the object itself if you can. And… if there is any chance, any at all, do not kill them. Not unless you must. If this was caused by magic, then magic may yet undo it. <Andanil turns his gaze aside, jaw tightening.> I am aware of how that sounds. Even so. Try.
On return
Do not stray too far. There is another Barrow Den farther north, within a druid grove. The druids there have made their feelings toward us very clear, and they were not welcoming. Whatever they guard is not meant for us, and I will not have you provoking another enemy while we are already stretched thin. Stay away from that place.
Turn-in
What is this? <Andanil stares into the artifact you retrieved. His eyes linger too long, as if it is staring back.> This is it? Yes… of course it is. I see it now. The magic is spent, drained dry, but there is no doubt. This is the source. This is what they found. Even emptied, it hums with purpose. <He lifts the object carefully, almost reverently, turning it in the light.> Such precision. There is no waste here, no ornament for vanity’s sake. This is not elven craft. I have studied relics from every corner of our past. Highborne vaults. Pre-Sundering ruins. Nothing even approaches this. Whatever made it did not think like us. It did not feel like us. And whatever power once flowed through it was enough to drain trained arcanists in moments and leave them wandering husks. And still, I cannot shake the feeling that this is only a shell. A key, perhaps. Something meant to be used again. I must return to Alah’thalas at once. Oh cousin… this time, I did not fail you.
